The wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) is a scombrid fish that lives in both tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. They can be found in the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans. These fish have a white opaque or grey flesh of a firm and flaky texture and a mild sweet, delicate taste.

Hawaiians give wahoo the name of ‘Ono’, which means ‘delicious‘ or ‘good to eat‘ in their language. Along with Hawaii, Bermuda and other parts of the Caribbean are some of the typically frequented waters by this species of fish. During the summer, they might be found migrating into temperate areas.

Wahoo is one of the most fast-growing fish in the sea, being able to gain over 20 pounds of weight in less than a year. They have a short life span of around nine years and reach sexual maturity when they are about a year old. At this stage, the fish’s length is between 2.8 and 3.3 feet. Fully grown fish can get between 4-6 feet long, and also can weigh around 100 pounds.

Is Wahoo Good To Eat?

Similar to other members of the scombrid family such as mackerel and tuna, the Wahoo is usually better grilled or baked. Their white and crispy meat has been labeled as one of the best eating fish and is also served in restaurants fried, steamed, sauteed, or raw.

They are a quick and fast fish, even though some specimens grow up to 9 feet. Therefore, they are more common in sports fishing than commercial fishing. However, they have a really delicious taste that makes them one of the most coveted species by a large number of cuisines around the world.

Is Wahoo Fish A Tuna?

Both tuna and wahoo are members of the scombrid family; however, they are different species. One of the main differences between the two is that wahoo can regulate their body temperature while tunas can. Besides, each one has a particular way to fight fishermen.

They are faster than tuna but can’t swim large distances, which makes them easier to catch after their run. In fact, some consider them the fastest swimming fish in the sea. On the contrary, tuna have a lot more stamina, allowing them to fight hard when being caught.

Is Wahoo Fish Expensive?

Wahoo is one of the most expensive fishes because their speed makes them difficult to catch. They can even be more expensive than a tuna steak.

Additionally, they are solitary fish, meaning that fishermen can’t catch them in mass quantities. Only on rare occasions, they are found traveling in small groups. These facts, in addition to their incredible taste, make them one of the most expensive fishes in the only few places that have them on the menu.

Wahoo Research In Florida

This species is currently under study by scientific institutes in Florida. The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and the Florida Atlantic University are trying to determine the relationship between wahoo specimens living in seas all around the world.

Also, councils responsible to protect marine wildlife are in an undergoing effort to limit commercial fishing of wahoo on the Atlantic coast.
